Jeff Milkins

Funeral Director

Jeffrey grew up in Temple. He graduated from Muhlenberg Township High School and Albright College, Reading with a bachelor of arts degree. While at Albright, he studied abroad in Puerto Rico, Mexico and attended the University of Seville, Spain. His father and mother, Harry and June Milkins, founded the Milkins Funeral Home in Temple and following in his father’s footsteps, Jeffrey attended the American Academy MacAllister Institute of Funeral Service, New York where he graduated valedictorian of his class, receiving the Dr. John MacAllister Memorial Award for Outstanding Scholarship.

In 1979 the family funeral business acquired the Kirkhoff Funeral Home in Bernville and operated it a as branch location. He was active in the family firms for over 40 years.

Jeffrey is a life member, elder and former Sunday School teacher of Christ United Church of Christ in Temple. He is a member of the Patriotic Order of the Sons of the American Revolution being a seventh generation great grandson of Brigadier General John Stark of New Hampshire who lead his New England militia to victory at the Battle of Bennington, VT.

He is a past president of the Berks County Funeral Directors Association, a past master and former trustee of Lodge #62, Free & Accepted Masons, West Reading and a life member and lecturer for the Wedgwood International Seminar. He was a former flower show judge for the Berks County Orchid Society and is an avid gardener and collector of antiques and fine art, particularly artists of Berks County.


Joseph Giles

Funeral Director, Supervisor

Joe purchased Milkins Funeral Home from Jeffrey Milkins in 2010 after operating the former Giles Funeral Home in Mohnton for thirty years.  Raised on a dairy farm in Huntingdon County, he saw his future early, he even informed his first-grade teacher that he wanted to be an “undertaker”.  He attended Tussey Mountain High School, Penn State University, and graduated from Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science.  

Joe is a member of St. John Baptist de la Salle in Shillington.  He and his wife, Stephanie Giles, enjoy spending time with their seven grandchildren.


Herb Houck

Funeral Director, Supervisor

A 4th-generation funeral director, Herb is originally from Pottstown, Pennsylvania.  He moved to Muhlenberg Twp. in 1987 where he and his wife, Debbie Leister Houck, raised their two sons, Herbert Houck, Jr. and Steve Houck; both graduates of Muhlenberg High School.  

Herb graduated mortuary school at Northampton Community College.  He has been a licensed funeral director at Milkins Giles Funeral Home since 1991 and supervisor of the branch location, Kirkhoff Funeral Home in Bernville, Pa.


Marie Sipler

Funeral Director

Marie is originally from Taneytown, Maryland where she grew up on a dairy farm.  She is an University of Maryland, College Park alumna who pursued a career in agriculture for 16-years, working at CNH (Case New Holland).  Feeling called to do something more meaningful for her community, she attended mortuary school at Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, and became a licensed funeral director in 2015.  She joined Milkins Giles and Kirkhoff funeral homes in May, 2017.  

Marie resides in Berks County with her family. Her daughter Josephine is a student at Alvernia University and her daughter Rebekah is an active member of the Berks County 4-H Goat Club.  Marie’s husband, Oscar was a dairy farmer for several years and is now employed at DBC Ag. Products where he works with farmers in Pennsylvania and surrounding states.


Gary Kohl

Funeral Assistant

Gary is the son-in-law of the late Ervin Kirkhoff who was the 2nd family generation of Kirkhoff Funeral Home.  Gary and his wife, Brenda enjoy living Bernville.  They lived in Florida for 16-years, returning to Pennsylvania to care for Ervin.  Gary is retired from Interstate Brands (Wonder Bread) where he spent many years as state-wide trucker.  Devoted to the Lord, Gary shares openly shares his faith and is a member of the Maranatha Baptist church in Sinking Spring.  He has worked for the funeral home for over 12 years.
